Students from South Worcestershire College have been using their new found skills to create a colourful outside space for teenagers to relax in at Evesham’s Ourside Youth Centre.

The students, who are all on the Progression Pathways Programme jumped at the chance to take part in the voluntary project and to learn some new skills along the way.

“We felt that the students would benefit hugely from taking part in some volunteer work” said Becky Wicks, PPP co-ordinator. “We have built up close links with the Youth Centre and we knew that they were very keen to set up an outdoor seating area where teenagers could relax. This was the perfect opportunity for our students to offer their services.”

The students put plans together for their design of the garden, and applied for funding from FLOSS (Funding Lots of Super Stuff), a funding scheme run by Worcestershire County Council designed to give 13 to 19-year-olds the chance to provide their local area with activities and projects their peers will benefit from. Two of the students were interviewed by the FLOSS panel and funding was awarded for the creation of the garden.

The Youth Centre requested that graffiti be included in the garden design, and so a graffiti class was organised for the students with well known graffiti artists, Graffiti Kings.

“The Graffiti Kings have appeared on the Young Apprentice and worked with Jedward and it was a real experience for our students to spend the day with them and learn some techniques about the real art of graffiti. The students understood that there is a negative aspect to graffiti, but used in the correct way it can be a great way of expressing themselves” said Becky.

“This has been a very beneficial project for our students, giving them practical skills, job satisfaction and the reward of giving up their time and energies for the benefits of others. Local companies, such as Buildbase have also come on board, donating materials such as the decking, and this has really helped to motivate our students” said Becky.

“We are happy to support local  youth projects in Evesham, it’s nice to see the kids get involved with this kind of hands on project and produce something everyone can use” said Chris Fereday, Manager of Buildbase in Evesham.
