Students Do Well in Well Dressing Competition
Students from South Worcestershire College have taken part in this year’s Well Dressing competition in Malvern.
The ancient tradition of well dressing began in the 12th century, and it became more popular in Malvern in 1600's when the Malvern springs kept flowing despite there being a drought at the time. The wells were dressed as a token of gratitude for the supply of water.
In 1993 the Well Decorating was reintroduced to Malvern. The competition is now held every May Bank Holiday and the theme this year was Celebration. The students from the College were involved in a collaborative project along with the Malvern Youth Centre and chose to do a Wedding Car project at the Rose Gully Well in Bank Lane in Malvern.
"The students have put a lot of effort into putting the display together for this competition, and they were thrilled to be awarded the bronze prize" said tutor Caron Millar. "Our students really benefit from entering this competition. They have not only the opportunity to be creative whilst working on the project, but can also learn something about the local history of the area."
