A student from South Worcestershire College has won gold for her performance of floor gymnastics at the 2010 Special Olympics.

Jennifer Chesterman, aged 22, who is on the Foundation Skills Programme at the College represented Great Britain along with 13 other athletes at the event.

Special Olympics Great Britain is the major provider of sporting opportunities for people with a learning disability in the country and uniquely focuses on providing equality of opportunity for all of the athletes regardless of their level of athletic ability or degree of disability.

Athletics, swimming, football, gymnastics and bowls are the five most popular and the most widely available sports.

Jennifer, who has also competed at the Special Olympics in Jersey, is a keen member of the local gymnastics club.

"I go to a gymnastics club every Sunday morning and my trainer Lesley suggested that I apply to be a member of team Great Britain" said Jennifer. Following her application Jennifer was offered a place and flew off with the rest of the team to Luxemburg to compete.

"It was my first time away from home, so I was a little bit nervous, but I was also very excited" said Jennifer.

Jennifer also won the silver for her vault work and took 4th place for her beam and bar work.

"I've met some amazing people on the trip and I've made my family, my boyfriend and my college very proud" said Jennifer.
