Art

To help you find out more about the Art academy, we've had a chat with Derek Street, the head of the academy, to find out what the academy can offer prospective students.

What subjects does your academy cover?

The School of Arts

Based on our Malvern campus, The School of Arts offers an exceptionally wide range of subjects from traditional Art and Crafts in specialist, traditional workshops through to contemporary Art Education in a newly refurbished studio setting.

We have an unusually well established and successful history of teaching of Art and Craft subjects because The School of Art and Crafts was originally established in Malvern in 1886 and has continued until today at the College as The School of Arts.

We offer a wide variety of part time recreational courses; short vocational courses and full time Diploma courses.

The School of Arts stages an end of year exhibition each July which features examples of all disciplines covered, and everyone is warmly invited to visit and discuss courses with tutors.

Recreational courses

These are run during the three academic terms and at our popular Summer School each August. We have approximately 700 students each term, and the majority of our tutors are working, exhibiting artists.

What skills do students under your academy gain?

Students can easily learn all the skills necessary to go on to study further at University, aim to set up their own practice, or seek work in a variety of Art and Crafts areas.

Tell us a bit about your academy's industry within the local area?

We have well established links and partnership agreements with local institutions, Worcester University and Hereford College of Art.

Do you have a message for any prospective students?

We run a wide variety of creative courses that cover a range of art and design subjects

Some of our recreational students have attended classes here for 30 years or more because of our exceptional subject specialism and facilities. For example we are one of the very few centres able to offer traditional bookbinding.

We work towards being a creative gateway to university or to jobs in the creative industries.

Set at the foot of the Hills in the traditional Spa town of Malvern we can offer an ideal base for a holiday at our Summer school.
