This course is ideal for those who want to work in the field of Animal Care and is suitable for a wide range of students in terms of age, ability and circumstances.

What qualifications do I need?
- Five GCSEs at D or above one of which should be English (Key Skills Level 1 will be considered)
- or a Level 1 Animal Care qualification
- All applicants will need to have a successful interview
- All applicants must be able to provide a reference
What's involved?
Subjects covered on this course will include:
- Animal accommodation, feeding, health and wellbeing
- Animal breeds and grooming
- Animal behaviour and handling
- Care of exotic animals
- One Functional Skill
How will I be studying?
Students will be assessed through assignment work which will be a mixture of monitoring reports, posters, presentations and essay style reports. You will attend a work placement one day per week and work on an assignment linked to that placement. Class work will be a mixture of group work and discussions with independent research and assignment writing. Practical work with the College animals will be part of the days work plus working trips to outside animal organisations.
Where can I move on to after this course?
Upon successful completion of the course (at Merit level or above), where you have demontrated a strong commitment and capability in your coursework and placement, and following a successful interview, you can progress on to the Level 3 Animal Care qualification (you will also need to have a Level 1 Functional Skill in English).
The wide range of skills and experience gained from this course helps many students to gain employment in kennels, catteries, rescue centres, sanctuaries and pet shops.
