Health and Social Care Apprenticeship Level 2

This is ideally for learners with a desire to work in the social care sector.

The qualification will guide and assess the development of knowledge and skills relating to working in health and social care. It also confirms the learner's competence in these areas and is the required qualification for all new practitioners.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements, however you will need to demonstrate a good interpersonal skills through effective verbal and non verbal communication, a respect for people who use the service, a suitable level of physical fitness and a motivation to succeed in the sector.  You will be required to undertake an enhanced CRB check.

You need to be employed in a health and social care setting in a role that is mainly under supervision.  You will require a successful interview and be able to supply a suitable reference.

What does the Apprenticeship cover?

You will study a range of units that will help you to develop the knowledge and understanding to work in supporting people in receipt of health or social care services.  Units include communication, equality and inclusion, principles of safeguarding and duty of care.

You will have hands on experience through your work setting where your practical ability will be assessed through observation of practice.  In addition to this you will be required to complete written evidence to demonstrate your knowledge and understanding in specialised areas.

Alongside the Diploma in Health and Social Care you will study a Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Level 2 plus Functional Skills in Maths and English at Level 1.

How long does it take?

The Level 2 Apprenticeship will each normally be completed within 12-18 months. During this time trainees may be required to attend college for day release or for short workshops and will be at their place of employment for the remainder. 

How is the course assessed?

Assessment will take a number of formats such as direct observation, log or reflective diary, oral questions and answers, scenario or case study, portfolio of evidence, expert witness evidence, written and pictorial information, reflection on own practice in a real work environment, tasks set by the awarding body or assessment method devised by the awarding body. 

The majority of assessment will be carried out in your normal place of work and will be undertaken by a dedicated and trained assessor.

What will I achieve and where do I go next?

On successful completion of the Apprenticeship this will provide you with the opportunity for progression to further study such as the Advanced Apprenticeship or into a variety of job roles such as working in residential care, supported living projects, community based care or acute health environments.  This list is not exhaustive.

What are the costs involved?

Learners over the age of 19 may be required to pay a fee; this is dependant upon prior qualifications obtained.
