Information
What qualifications do I need?
You will need four GCSEs at grades D-G (or above) or a BTEC Level 1 Diploma. Mature students with relevant work experience may not need to fulfil entry requirements, as long as they can demonstrate that they are academically capable of working at this level. All applicants will require a police check.
What's involved?
Eight units will be studied based around practical skills:
- Core units include: Communication, Individual Needs, Individual Rights and Ensuring Safe Environments in Health and Social Care
- Specialist units include: Vocational Experience, Creative and Therapeutic Activities, Impact of Diet on Health and Human Lifespan Development
- You will also study a Functional Skill in English
How will I be studying?
You will complete written and practical activities, take part in discussions and role play, participate in work experience, as well as taking part in enrichment activities such as trips and on-site activities to extend and develop learning.
You will be encouraged to find your own work placements in children's nurseries, nursing homes or other relevant care settings and may consider doing voluntary work in the sector.
Where can I move to after this course?
If you have achieved Merit level or above, you may progress on to a Level 3 course such as Health and Social Care or Childcare and Education. Mature students could apply to join the Level 3 Access to Higher Education course or move into employment.
It is recommended that those students who do not possess a GCSE English grade C or above undertake this qualification if they wish to move onto a higher level qualification.
