Information

What qualifications do I need?

No formal qualifications are required, but applicants will need to prove competence in English language. All candidates will be asked to bring a portfolio, showing evidence of an interest in art, to an interview.

What's involved?

The course provides an introduction to a variety of art disciplines, for example drawing, life, painting, silversmithing, textiles, printmaking, sculpture, bookbinding, digital imaging, mixed media and art history. Students are then given the opportunity to develop their own interests through an independent study in term 3. The course also includes some English skills and study skills, such as speaking and listening, research and note taking, in order to ensure that you have the skills required for seminar presentations and written work at Higher Education Level.

What qualifications do I get?

Access to Higher Education Certificate (OCN Kite marked). This is equivalent to three A Levels.

How will I be studying?

Studio work, group discussions, seminars, tutorials, individual studies and research.

Are any trips or visits involved?

Students will visit the University of Worcester Library and Art Department. Visits to Art Galleries and exhibitions will be arranged as part of the course.

What about asssessments?

Students are given assignment briefs with clearly identified assessment criteria and deadlines. They are encouraged to track and self evaluate their own progress. Tutors continually assess students' progress through portfolio, sketchbook, individual research, essays and seminar presentations. One piece of practical work is carried out under quiet examination conditions but there are no formal examinations. At the end of the course students select work and plan their exhibition, which is open to the public, and can form part of their final assessment.

What's next?

Our students have progressed to a variety of Higher Education establishments nationwide. Specialisms chosen have been as diverse as artist blacksmithing, fine art and animation. Locally, students usually choose to study for BA degrees in Art at the University of Worcester or Hereford Art College. Some have continued to study with us at the Malvern campus on a variety of courses including three part-time Level 1 Art degree modules which can form a useful progression route towards a full degree. Your personal tutor will advise you and help you choose the most suitable path for you. Other students have become self-employed or progressed into employment.
